Wuqiangxi “5G Expressway” Project Launched

Compared to 4G technology, 5G wireless communication technology  has faster transmission speeds, shorter response times, larger access capacity, and more reliable transmission quality. 5G will become a strong technical driver for the new-round industrial revolution. China, using its 5G-based technical and industrial advantages, is striving to upgrade 5G infrastructure and promote 5G-based applications in various fields. It has taken the lead in developing 5G worldwide.
On September 21, Hunan’s first 5G base station for hydropower engineering started construction on the left bank of the Wuqiangxi dam. It marks the implementation of cooperation among Wuling, Hunan Telecom, and Huawei, in accordance with their tripartite agreement for 5G-based Mobile and Industrial Internet Construction.
Wuling’s 5G network construction project, part of its hydropower plant digitalization and management research program, has launched. Four 5G base stations are planned in the project and they will begin commercial operation November 30 this year.
Wuling's hydropower plant digitalization and management research program, is a key research program of the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), Wuling’s parent company. It focuses on SPIC’s strategic targets and corresponds with digitalized, and intelligentized, SPIC energy business development operations. Innovations have been made based on rigorous surveys. A plan was proposed that 5G mobile communication technology and state-of-the-art network infrastructure be introduced into hydropower engineering and that a “5G expressway” will be built to cover construction sites and connect all regions. It plans to use 5G mobile broadband, machine-type communication (MTC) and ultra-reliable, low-latency, communication (URLLC) technologies to support the Wuqiangxi Hydropower Plant engineering digitalization progress. This will apply to the following: BIM application; the management and control of Internet of Things; digitalized engineering; mobile supervision; and, project progress monitoring. This will help Wuqiangxi capacity expansion project be “safe, competitive, environmental-friendly, exemplary, and smart”. It will help SPIC explore new models for hydropower engineering management and control.
